Under-Promising, Over-Delivering, and Exceeding Expectations at Work

1/22/2020

Personal branding is an important consideration in a person's professional life and career. Obviously, you want to brand yourself in the best way possible.

And one of the best ways to brand yourself is as somebody who under-promises, over-delivers, and exceeds expectations in all areas. First things first: a person who over-promises and under-delivers brands themselves as unreliable.

How is that the case? Think about it for a moment. What if you knew somebody who always claimed that they could do something, but ultimately, they could never do it?

If that was the case, would you trust that person? Of course not! You would think the person is unreliable. Actually, it would be worse than that. You would think the person is untrustworthy, and you would not trust them with anything of importance.

Below are simple steps for under-promising, over-delivering, and exceeding expectations at work:

#1 - Do NOT promise more than what you KNOW you can deliver.

This might seem like it's common sense, but you might be surprised by how many people are not able to follow this first step. No matter how much you're tempted to promise something more than you know you can deliver, don't do it.

#2 - Do NOT "sandbag" and promise too little.

There is another side to the equation, though, and that involves promising too little. That will make you appear as though you're not ambitious enough or that you don't have initiative. That's not the way you want to brand yourself, either.

#3 - Do what you say you're going to do.

This is perhaps the most important step on this list. This is exactly how you brand yourself as reliable, and by extension, as trustworthy. This is even the case if you under-promise. Whether or not you actually do what you say you're going to do is very important to other people.

#4 - Focus on results.

Results are what matter the most. That's what your boss or supervisor wants, and that's what their boss or supervisor wants. Ask yourself: what do you need to do to get the results you need? And when we say the results that you need, we mean the results that you've promised to others, including your boss or supervisor.

Time Staffing's team of qualified staffing specialists offers assistance to job seekers in the light industrial and clerical fields. We prep candidates thoroughly by answering their questions and addressing their concerns.

Take, for instance, this testimonial from a job seeker who found a new job through Time Staffing:
