The Importance of Being Accountable While on the Job

Let's start with a simple truth: nobody likes excuses when things don't go the way they're supposed to go.

This is especially the case with in the professional setting, and when we say within the professional setting, we mean while you're on the job. If you're the type of person who likes to offer excuses for why things don't get done - or get done correctly - then you're going to experience problems within the world of employment.

We've addressed the topic of personal branding before in this blog. Simply put, your personal brand is the perceived experience that you give to people when you interact with them.

It's important to note that it's how the other person perceives the experience that's important. If you have an interaction with somebody, and you thought the interaction went well and that you branded yourself in a positive way, but they didn't… then you actually did NOT brand yourself positively.

And one of the best ways that you can brand yourself while on the job or in the professional setting is as somebody who is accountable and who does not make excuses for themselves.

And here are four specific benefits of doing this:

#1 - Better relationship with your co-workers

Many times in the professional setting, when somebody makes excuses, they blame their co-workers. By the simple act of NOT blaming your co-workers for things you've done (or haven't done), your relationship with them will be better.

#2 - Better relationship with your boss

This also makes sense. Your boss, of all people, does not want to hear your excuses. They want results. And if they don't get those results, then they want you to be accountable and not make excuses.

#3 - Greater chances for advancement with your employer

If you consistently brand yourself as somebody who gets results and is accountable for your performance, then you increase the chances that you can land a promotion and/or raise. That's because you've now also branded yourself as somebody who is reliable and trustworthy.

#4 - Greater chances for career success

This is the next logical step. If you make being accountable a permanent part of your personal brand and continue to consistently get results, then it will translate into success not just at your current employer, but also at future employers. And herein lies the most important reason for always being accountable while on the job.
