If you've ever felt like you're being overwhelmed at work, then you know how frustrating it can be to feel as though you're always behind. How great would it be to feel as though you weren't behind, but caught up?
Then think about how great it would feel if you weren't just caught up, but you were ahead! Not only does getting on top of your work save you frustration and stress and help you to enjoy your work more, but it also sets you up for more career success. That's because when you're on top of your work (and on top of your game), management tends to notice. And when they see you consistently producing and performing at high levels, there could be promotions and raises in your future. With all of this in mind, below are three strategies for getting on top of your work (and staying there): #1 - Arrive at work early. This is recommended for a number of reasons. However, for our purposes, it helps you to attack the day, so that you don't start the day behind. When you start the day and you're already behind, it makes it more difficult for you to "dig out of the hole" you're in. However, when you start the day right, you have more confidence and it makes it easier to tackle your workload in a proactive fashion. #2 - Place an emphasis on prioritization. You might be familiar with the "80-20 Rule." According to this rule, 80% of your results come from 20% of your activities. The key is to determine which of your activities fall into that 20% and focus on those as much as you can. Prioritization means doing what is most important and dropping those things that do not lend themselves to productivity. #3 - Plan ahead as much as possible. You might be familiar with this saying, as well: "When you fail to plan, you plan to fail." It may sound cheesy or hokey, but it's also absolutely true. Here's another saying, for good measure: "Proper planning prevents poor performance." When you know exactly what needs to be done and you know that the things you're about to do are the most important things, not only do you feel better and have more confidence, but you're also more productive. Implement these simple strategies at your job. They can help you get on top of your work (and stay there).
