How Your Company Can Avoid Bad Hires and Mis-Hires

Hiring is difficult enough in the current marketplace, with labor shortages in many industries. However, when employers make the mistake of hiring the wrong person, it makes hiring even more difficult.

A bad hire or a mis-hire can be extremely costly for companies and organizations, including in terms of money. If you hire the wrong person, first you have to get rid of that person. Then you have to start the hiring process all over again, basically duplicating your efforts. Now it takes twice as much time, energy, and effort to hire the right person.

Below are four ways that your company can avoid bad hires and mis-hires:

#1 - Conduct background checks.

This is a non-negotiable, mandatory part of the hiring process. You can't expect to enjoy hiring success without conducting background checks. When you do this, not only will you increase the likelihood that you'll hire better, but you'll also streamline the hiring process and save time in the process. The only thing better than hiring the right person is hiring the right person quickly.

#2 - Solicit the participation of multiple interviewers.

Different people have different points of view. This should come as no surprise. However, different perspectives contribute to greater hiring success. When multiple people ask questions during an interview, what they collectively think about the person being interviewed paints a more accurate picture of their candidacy.

#3 - Screen candidates as thoroughly as you can.

Yes, you're conducting background checks. Yes, multiple people are interviewing candidates. However, it's a good idea to use as many screening methods as possible. This includes aptitude and personality tests, as well as other testing. When you implement this strategy, you'll be more informed and thus, you'll be more likely to make a better hiring decision.

#4 - Analyze your company's past hiring success (or lack of it).

What you've done in the past as an organization can shed some light on what you should do in the future. Look at your best employees. How did you hire those employees? Specifically, what was the process by which you hired them? Ideally, incorporate that same process in your attempts to hire new employees. In the same fashion, what was the process involved with your worst hires? Ideally, you should avoid whatever was involved with that process.
