The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging in more ways than one, and that certainly pertains to the employment marketplace.
The economic slowdown and corresponding job losses are one thing. Managing employees who are working from home is another. Managing employees who have to practice social distancing protocols while in the office or on the factory floor is yet another. With this much uncertainty and chaos in the market and in the workplace, it can be difficult to maintain morale within your organization. In the interests of maintaining high levels of productivity, you should definitely pay attention to these levels of morale. Below are five steps for improving employees' attitude in the workplace: #1 - Be proactive. You can't be reactive in this kind of situation. You have to "stay ahead of the curve" and address problems before they really start to fester. Because by the time they start to fester, you could have even bigger problems on your hands. #2 - Identify the root cause or problem. Low morale and bad attitudes might be caused by the pandemic… or they might not. Either way, it's imperative to find out the real reason employees are unmotivated or lacking drive. If you think you've uncovered the cause and you're wrong, it could make the problem worse. #3 - Be encouraging and complimentary. As we've stated before, a pat on the back (metaphorically, of course) and a kind word can go a long way. Employees want to know that they're appreciated, and even more so during conditions such as these. #4 - Address employees individually, if necessary. If you discover that one or two employees are largely responsible for low morale, then take steps to address these employees. If left unchecked, they could cause more damage to the overall psyche of the team, and that's the last thing you need. #5 - Replace toxic employees. This is a last resort, of course, but sometimes it must be done. This is the time when you need positive people with can-do attitudes. More often than not, one upbeat employee with a positive attitude is worth more than two who are eroding the team’s morale and attitude.
