We've discussed the topic of personal branding in this blog, specifically as it pertains to the employment marketplace and your career. A person's image is closely related to personal branding, since their image is one of the ways in which they brand themselves.
Once again, though, people don't brand themselves. They're branded by others, the people with whom they interact. A person can have influence over the way others brand them, but they don't have direct control. So the key is to influence the branding process in the best way by presenting a positive image. And below are five ways to enhance your image within the workplace: #1 - Dress appropriately. The way that you dress says a lot about you. Of course, you may be required to wear a uniform as part of your employment, but the way you maintain or wear that uniform is also important. Keep your appearance as neat and clean as possible, regardless of whether a uniform is required. Ask yourself what kind of message you're sending with the way you dress. #2 - Be punctual. This extends beyond just being on time for work. It also means being on time for meetings and project-related activities. The rule is simple: if somebody is expecting you to be somewhere at a certain time, be there. This is one of the easiest ways to enhance your image. #3 - Speak well. How you speak in the workplace, well... speaks volumes about you as an employee. You don't want to mumble and you don't want to stammer. Instead, speak loudly and with authority. (Not too loud, mind you.) And also don't talk too closely to others in terms of proximity. Nobody likes a "close talker.") #4 - Watch your comments. This is a corollary to #3. Avoid lewd or inappropriate comments. It doesn't matter if you think you're talking with close friends or not. Words travel and somebody might overhear you. In this day and age, inappropriate comments can be construed as harassment, and it doesn't matter whether you meant the comments to harass the person or not. It only matters if they feel as though they were harassed. That's reason enough to be vigilant. #5 - Stay organized. No matter how much (or little) is in your workspace, strive to keep these items in an orderly fashion. This is the same principle that applies to how you dress. Give others the impression that you take care of what is entrusted to you. Are you currently engaged in a job search? Then Time Staffing can help!
