If you’re a company and you hire new employees, then you want those new employees to be as productive as they can be as quickly as they can be. That’s because the sooner that they’re productive, the sooner they will provide value for the organization.
But how can you ensure that happens? One way is by effectively engaging them early in their employment. There are many ways to engage employees, but in this instance, we’re talking about sitting down and having a conversation with them. Sure, you can have an informal chat that lasts a minute or two. However, that won’t make as much of an impact. When you sit down with these employees, the key is to ask the right questions. That way, you’re sure to get the answers you need to engage them more in the future. Below are five questions for effectively engage new employees in the workplace: #1—“What do you like about your new job?” This may seem like a “softball” question, but it really isn’t. That’s because you would expect the employee to respond on a positive and exciting way. If they don’t, then that might serve as a warning sign of sorts. #2—“What don’t you like about your new job?” You might think that the new employee wouldn’t have anything they didn’t like (at least not yet), but that is almost never the case. There’s probably something, but they don’t want to offer up that information. However, they might share in this type of private setting. #3—“What are your expectations?” Expectations of what, exactly? Well, everything . . . their job, themselves, their co-workers, and even management. The great thing about discussing their expectations is that you can easily start talking about your expectations of them. #4—“What are your goals?” Where there are goals, there is motivation. And if you’re going to understand and engage your employees more effectively, then you must know what motivates them. Motivation precedes action (or in some cases, inaction) 100% of the time. #5—“What do you need from me to do your job better?” Employees doing their job better is exactly what the company wants. More specifically, the company’s employees wanting to do their job better is exactly what the company wants. And the sooner you know what they need to succeed, the better.
