Hiring People Who Know How to Manage Themselves

There are many levels of successful hiring. Some hires are better than others. Hiring somebody who you can manage easily is a good hire. Hiring somebody who knows how to manage themselves is a great hire.


Here are just a few of the reasons why this is a great hire:


  •     ïThey save you time because they don't need "hand holding" or constant supervision.
  •     ïThey save their time for the same reason.
  •     ïThis means they increase not only their own production, but also the production of those around them, including members of management.


The question is, though, how do you spot this type of employee? What characteristics do they exhibit, so that you can identify them during the hiring process and get them on your team as soon as possible?


Below are some of the top traits and characteristics of employees who are capable of managing themselves so that they save time and increase productivity:


#1 - They love a challenge.


These employees don't shy away from a challenge. They crave a challenge! And if they don't feel as though you're challenging them enough, then they'll challenge themselves. How can you not like an employee like that?


#2 - They set goals for themselves.


Once again, even if you set goals for them as the employer, they will set goals, as well. One of the reasons, of course, is that they like to challenge themselves, as we've just discussed. Another reason is that they want to maximize the amount of value they offer.


#3 – They're constantly seeking improvement.


In these employees' attempts to maximize their value, they're always looking to improve. This means they're always looking for ways to do things better. This also means that they're not content with the status quo, which is another good sign.


#4 - They know they don't know everything.


When they don't know something, they don't "fake it until they make it." Instead, they ask the right questions of the right people to the get the information they need to be successful. Win-win!


#5 - They aren't afraid to fail.


These employees know that failure is an inevitable part of life - and part of work. They don't allow the fear of failure to stop them from moving forward in the name of progress and productivity. And when they do fail, they learn from the situation. They don't obsess over it.
