Fostering Accountability with Your Employees and Teams

Every company and organization would like for its employees to be more accountable. However, how can you make that happen on a consistent basis? Obviously, you can't force people to be held accountable. While you might meet your goal on occasion, your efforts will most likely be met with resistance, quite possibly undermining your efforts in other areas.

No, the key is to make accountability commonplace, and the key to accomplishing that is to make it a consistent part of the everyday regime within the organization. In other words, it can't be a "sometimes thing." It has to be an "all the time thing."

Below are four steps for fostering accountability with your employees and teams:

#1 - Set the priorities.

If you want your employees to be accountable, then you should make sure they're accountable to the right things. Not only should you set the priorities, but you should also communicate those priorities clearly to everybody who will be accountable for them.

#2 - Provide the expectations.

Teams and the employees that comprise those teams have a right to know what is expected of them. After all, a person can't be held accountable for something if they didn't even know what they were being held accountable for in the first place. That's a bit unfair, don't you think?

#3 - Communicate feedback.

Speaking of communication, it's also important to provide feedback on how the employees or teams are performing and the progress they're making. This way, they can make the proper adjustments to ensure they reach their goals and meet their expectations.

#4 - Be an example for others to follow.

Accountability begins with the members of management within your company or organization. When employees see their boss and their supervisors practicing accountability and not just preaching it, they're more likely to "get on board" with the program.
