Yes, we're in the midst of a good economy and a great market as far as job seekers are concerned. Employers are ready, willing, and able to hire. They have positions to fill, and they want to fill them as soon as they possibly can.

However, you're still competing against other job seekers and candidates. It's not like you're "running unopposed" when you apply for a job. You still have to go through the process and you still have to impress company officials enough to convince them to offer you the job. So... how do you do that?

Below are four steps for increasing the chances that you'll get the job:

#1 - Strive to perfect your resume.

Perfection is, of course, impossible. However, you should be working tirelessly to make your resume as flawless as it can be. That means from a structural, content, and grammar standpoint. Enlist the services of a resume expert, if you must. It's an investment that can pay dividends over and over again.

#2 - Practice your interview skills.

This includes both the phone screen and the face-to-face interview. The old saying "Practice makes perfect" is absolutely true. The more that you do something, the better you will become. Ideally, you want phone screens and interviews to become almost second nature you. That way, you will appear completely calm and relaxed when it comes time for the real thing.

#3 - Conduct extensive research.

This refers to extensive research about the company or organization. You can conduct this research online and through social media. The idea is to accumulate as much knowledge as you can about both the employer and the position for which you're applying. This will help ensure that you're ready for just about any question that you might be asked.

#4 - Stress the value that your possess.

Ah, yes... it's all about the value. Specifically, it's all about the value that you possess and could provide to a potential new employer. What value is that? What forms does your value take? Does it consist of both hard (technical skills) and soft (people) skills? You must be able to articulate all of these skills and all of your value during the phone screen and interview.
