It’s difficult to believe, but the first half of the year is nearly over. (Once again, it flew by, did it not?)
The middle of the year is an opportune time to do a great many things, including take a vacation. However, it’s also a great time to reflect on your professional life. This gives you a chance to reflect upon what happened during the first six months, catch your breath (both literally and figuratively), and prepare for the last half of the year. What’s on your mid-year career development checklist? Does it include the following? Updating your resume What have you accomplished during the past six months? Did you complete a project? Reach a goal? Win an award? Then document it! Employers use past accomplishments as an indication of future success with their organization. Updating your LinkedIn profile When you update your resume with information, you should also update your LinkedIn profile with that same information. Your profile does not replace your resume, but they should mirror each other. You never know how your LinkedIn profile might lead to a new employment opportunity. Be ready for that. Updating your references While you’re updating stuff, you should also update your references. Is there anybody you should add to your list of references, including people you’ve met during the past six months? Be sure to reach out to your references, too. By contacting them, you not only ensure that their contact information is accurate, but they’ll also appreciate the effort. Adding to your networking list Not everybody can be a reference, but just about everybody can be a contact. Networking is crucial to your career development efforts, and that’s why your networking list should always be growing and evolving. Participating in industry associations Which associations exist? Which ones have you joined? These organizations provide many opportunities, especially when it comes to adding to your networking list. Fully explore the options that are available and make judicious decisions that will strategically grow your career. Are you ready for the second half of the year?
