There are a lot of ways to impress your boss and management. One of those ways is to stay cool under pressure, which we addressed in a recent blog post. Another way is to maximize your productivity.
Maximizing your productivity is an ongoing process. You're never finished. You never get to the point where you say, "That's it. I could not possibly be more productive than I am right now." There's always something that you can do to become even more productive. With the goal of constant improvement in mind, below are five steps for maximizing productivity while on the job: #1 - Identify and record what needs to be done. You can't do what needs to be done if you don't know what needs to be done. However, must making a mental list won't cut it. If possible, create a list. You can use a notepad or you can create the list in your phone. Use the method that works the best for you. #2 - Prioritize what needs to be done. To maximize your productivity, you must do what is most important. To do that, though, you must identify what is most important first. If something on your list is not "mission critical," then it can go toward the bottom of the list. And just because a task is easy to complete does NOT mean that it deserves space at the top of the list. #3 - Create systems and processes. In addition to completing the most important tasks first, another step for maximizing your productivity is to complete those tasks more quickly. Creating systems and processes is one way to accomplish this. After implementing a system or process, the more you use it, the faster you will become. #4 - Eliminate distractions. Focus is incredibly important in terms of productivity. If you're distracted, that means you're not completing the volume of work that you could be completing and you're not completing it as quickly as you could be. Phone calls, interruptions, etc. These should all be avoided. #5 - Make adjustments. Track your progress in terms of productivity. What worked? What didn't work? Obviously, you want to do more of the former and less of the latter. This is part of the ongoing process that we mentioned at the beginning of this blog post.
