In a previous blog post, we addressed “5 Steps for Keeping Your Team from Getting Burned Out.”Those steps included the following:
Assess the situation. Acknowledge the situation. Incorporate more variety in the workday. Offer more flexibility. Have more FUN. However, preventing burnout is a tricky matter. It can often feel like you’re trying to “hit a moving target.” That’s why we’re back with four MORE steps for keeping your team from getting burned out: #1—Solicit feedback. In situations such as this, employees want to feel as though they’re being heard. So while admitting that there is a problem is important, so is asking the employees for their ideas regarding what can be done to reverse the problem. After all, they are the closest to the situation, so soliciting their feedback makes sense simply from that perspective. #2—Work together for possible solutions. If employees are burning out, the last thing they want is to be dictated to. So not only should you make sure they feel heard, but you should also strive to devise joint solutions that will allow them to feel as though they’ve taken ownership of those solutions. Don’t just ask for their feedback and then dismiss it out of hand. #3—Cast a vision for the future. As a manager and/or leader, you should always be casting a vision for your employees. They want to know what the future holds for the company, and they want to know what their role is within that future. If an employee is getting burned out on a single project, assure them that their value in the organization extends beyond this one project. Take the focus off their immediate frustration. #4—Instill positive energy and hope. A positive attitude IS contagious, and everybody wants to believe that a situation has hope. Part of casting a vision for the future is instilling hope in employees that better days are ahead. The great thing about hope is that it’s both inspiring and motivating. A lack of motivation is a major factor in burnout. Re-igniting that motivation is central to turning the situation around. Avoiding employee burnout is not easy, and navigating your way through it is even more difficult. It takes a deft hand and a proactive approach to achieve the type of balance you need to maintain high levels of both productivity and employee satisfaction.
